Mom Life Unfiltered: Embracing the Messy, Hilarious, and Real Side of Parenthood

What is Baby Led Weaning?

Twenty years ago, when I had my first child, I was told to start giving my baby puree baby food at around 4 months old and increase the stages as she got older and could handle thicker textures. I did the same thing with my next baby 4 years later. Those two are extremely picky eaters and have been most of their lives.

Fast forward to 2022 when I’m pregnant with my third baby. I started following accounts on Instagram that I thought might help me prepare for this baby. I felt like I was starting all over as a new mom again, so I wanted to be prepared. I found this account called @feedinglittles and began following them because they seemed to offer a lot of tips on feeding picky eaters. The longer I followed them, I realized that they actually teach and encourage the method called “baby led weaning”. Seemed like such a strange term to me so I checked into it more. Basically, it’s offering your baby normal foods that the rest of the family eats starting around 6 months old (once they can support themselves in a sitting position on their own) and letting them lead the way. I had so many questions and concerns, but I was intrigued because in recent years, I’ve heard some not-so-great things about what they are putting in jarred baby food, so the idea of feeding our baby food that I made myself that the rest of us were already eating sounded very appealing.

As Stinky approached 6 months of age, we decided to purchase their infant course to prepare us for when he was ready to start solids. I was back and forth about purchasing a course about feeding my baby because it seemed pretty straight forward-feed the baby what you eat. But being a “first time mom” again, my nerves got the best of me, and I didn’t care if I was over prepared. The thought of giving my little baby chunks of food when he was just starting to eat was SCARY! I’m SO glad we purchased the course. There really was so much helpful information that I didn’t expect. Not only do they have safety information, but they show you how you can have stress free family meals and teach your child to be an adventurous eater rather than a picky one. How many of you remember sitting at the dinner table as a kid and being told that you couldn’t get up until you finished what was on your plate? How many of you did this with your children or plan to? How many of you make more than one meal at dinner time so that there is something to eat that everyone likes? (Me!) How many of you dread mealtime because you know it’s going to be a battle getting your child to eat? Their infant and toddler courses fix all of these issues. We now enjoy mealtime. Not only that, but it’s amazing watching the method actually work for our little Stinky. He has tried literally every food that his dad and I have eaten, and he isn’t hesitant to try new foods. So far, there have only been a couple of things that he seems to not like but we continue to offer them to him (not forcing him to eat them) in case he wants to try again. It really has taken so much stress out of mealtimes.

I was so happy with their courses; I reached out to them, and they gave me links that will give you $10 off each course. Once you purchase these courses, they are yours for life. You can always refer back to them. They even have trouble shooting sections for when you are having specific problems with your child’s eating. You can take the course at your own pace, and it has the option to watch it as videos, read it, or have it read to you. They make it so easy.

If you have a baby that is starting solids soon, has already begun eating purees and you’re curious about another method, or even if you have an older child that is a picky eater, you WILL benefit from these courses. The infant course is for ages 6 months-1 year. The toddler/kid course is for children 1 year and up! There is no age limit! Take advantage of the $10 off links below and follow feedinglittles on Instagram and start enjoying mealtimes with your children.
